5 Health Benefits of a Low Carb Diet

There is no doubt that a low-carb, high-fat diet works.  And it works fast.  Take myself for example, within the first 13 days I had lost 3.2kg and 1.9% body fat!

If you have done some research about low-carb you will most likely have come across the word ketosis.

WHAT IS KETOSIS?

When carbohydrates are restricted, our bodies begin a process called ketosis.  A process by which the body produces small fuel molecules called ‘ketones’.  The body and brain uses this as an alternative fuel source when blood sugar (glucose) is low.

When you are in ketosis your entire body is running almost entirely on fat.  Your insulin levels are very low because there is very little carbohydrate intake, which dramatically reduces your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, amongst other things.  There have even been success stories of  type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic diseases being reversed by following a low-carb, high-fat diet.

Now, can you see why Banting is so effective?

What a lot of people might not know is that there are loads of other benefits too. Five of the most common benefits are:

  1. Reversal of type 2 diabetes
  2. Normalize blood pressure
  3. Cravings are severely reduced
  4. Greater quality of sleep
  5. Increased physical endurance

This is not a quick-fix crash diet. It’s simple, and it works because it’s what we were designed to eat.

I am here to help you become a successful Banter, if there is anything that I can do to help please leave a comment below:)

  1. As a fellow Ketoer (is that even a word?) I completely agree with the results. But never heard of it be called Banting…learn something new everyday I guess. It’s amazing how I once shunned anything with fat and here I am having 70% of my diet nothing but! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Now it is:) I know right, and once you try it there really is no going back, it feels amazing!

  2. Hi! Thanks so much for this article explaining what ketosis is. I have heard of it before, but never really knew what it meant.

Banting seems to go against everything the media tells us these days. It’s all low fat or no fat based on some outdated study done years ago.

Have you ever heard of Dr. Mark Hyman’s book, Eat Fat Get Thin?

    1. Hi,

      Thank you for your comment!

You are most welcome, I am pleased to hear that you found this post useful and learned something new!

There is a common misconception that eating fat is bad for you, and that it causes high blood pressure and heart disease. This could not be further from the truth and was based on a flawed study by Ancel Keys in 1953. The truth is that a diet high in carbohydrates is the cause of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

I have heard of the book but I haven’t read it myself, is it worth a read?

      Cheers

  3. I often go back and further with what is best for losing weight, reducing carbohydrate intake or reducing calorie intake. I know they both work so I guess I’ll just need to try them out and compare.

I do enjoy carbs and I’m totally happy with reducing my intake of white carbs and replacing them with good brown and complex carbs. But I’ll definitely consider this diet.

    1. Hi Lyle,

Thanks so much for your comment!

The beauty of the Banting diet is that there is no need to count calories.  You eat until satiety, and fat keeps you fuller for longer.

Just to be clear, you should avoid both white and brown carbs as they both cause a spike in insulin.

I would suggest downloading the Banting food list from my post titled, “Banting Food List, What Should You Eat on a Low Carb Diet?”, you will get a greater understanding of what foods to eat, and which ones to avoid.

My Get Started page is also a great place to start.

Please let me know if there is anything I could do to help you.

      All the best!

      Angelo
